The Blue String Trail
The bit of blue string in the bird nest had to come from somewhere. Daniel, Luna, and Benny were determined to follow it.
The Clue in the Vines
The Backyard Explorer Kids stood under the fence vines, keeping a safe distance from the little bird nest.
Daniel held the wooden whistle in his pocket. βFirst the whistle. Now blue string. This backyard really likes secrets.β
Benny pointed up. βThat tiny piece is our clue. I want to know where the rest went.β
Luna crouched by the fence post. βWe look with our eyes. We do not touch the nest.β
Grandpa Ray, trimming basil nearby, nodded. βGood rule.β
So they searched the ground instead. At first they found only leaves, a twig, and one lost clothespin. Then Benny spotted a little blue thread caught on the fence.
βTrail starter,β he said.
Daniel leaned closer. Another bit clung to a rose branch. One more hung from the old garden stool.
βItβs going that way,β Luna said. βToward the clothesline.β
Following the Trail
The three explorers moved across the yard, finding blue bits one after another.
One was looped around a dandelion stem.
One was stuck under the wheel of the laundry basket.
A longer strip fluttered from the tomato cage.
βMaybe birds opened a craft store,β Benny said.
βVery tiny prices,β Daniel replied.
Luna checked the grass by the basket. βHereβs a thicker piece.β
Daniel looked up.
Something red was flapping high near the clothesline pole.
It was a kite.
One corner was bent, and only one short piece of blue tail still hung from the bottom.
Benny gave a quiet gasp. βThatβs where the string came from.β
Luna nodded. βThe tail tore in the wind. Some pieces landed around the yard, and the birds used one in their nest.β
They had solved part of the mystery, but not the whole thing yet. They still had to get the kite down, fix it, and return it.
The Missing Tail
Daniel stretched for the pole and missed by a lot.
Grandpa Ray walked over with a long rake. βNo climbing.β
βI was only thinking about climbing a little,β Daniel said.
βStill no,β said Grandpa Ray.
With Grandpa Ray holding the rake steady, Daniel and Luna gently eased the kite down. It was bright red with two yellow stripes and a cloud sticker on the wooden crosspiece.
βI know that sticker,β Daniel said. βItβs on Miaβs backpack.β
βNext-door Mia?β Benny asked.
Daniel nodded. βShe was flying a kite this week.β
Luna turned the kite over. βThen we know the owner. But we should fix the tail first.β
They carried the kite to the picnic table and laid out their supplies: child-safe tape, ribbon, and the blue pieces they had found.
Benny held up a strawberry sock. βBackup tail?β
βNo,β Daniel and Luna said together.
βWorth a try,β Benny said.
A Bad First Fix
The first repair did not go well.
The knots were too chunky. The tail twisted. When Daniel lifted the kite, the bottom swung sideways.
βThat kite would wobble like a dizzy duck,β Benny said.
Luna untied the lumpy parts. βWe need to copy the old tail.β
They studied the last original piece still attached to the kite. The blue strips were light, even, and spaced carefully.
Daniel fetched a roll of plain blue ribbon from the porch craft jar. It was almost the same color as the missing pieces.
βThat must be where the birds got nest string too,β he said.
βThen it matches,β Luna said.
This time they worked slowly. Daniel measured. Luna checked the spaces. Benny held the kite still and announced important things like, βNot wobbly yet,β and, βThis one looks promising.β
At last Daniel lifted the kite again.
The new blue tail hung straight and light.
βWind-ready,β Benny declared.
Daniel looked pleased. βNow we solved it.β
Luna shook her head. βNot until it goes home.β
The Return
Mia was drawing with sidewalk chalk in her front yard when the explorers walked over.
She sprang up. βMy kite!β
Daniel handed it to her carefully. βIt got caught by our clothesline. The tail tore apart, so we fixed it.β
βAnd a bird borrowed one piece for decorating,β Benny said.
Mia ran her fingers along the smooth red paper and the new blue tail. βThank you. I thought it was gone forever.β
Then she tipped the kite toward the sun. βLook at this.β
A faint pencil drawing showed through the paper.
Daniel leaned in. βThat looks like our backyard.β
It did. The sketch showed the shed, the flower corner, the fence, and a small mark near the bench.
βMy brother found this old kite frame at a garage sale,β Mia said. βWe put new paper on it, but the hidden drawing still shows when the light hits it.β
The three explorers stared at the secret map inside the kite.
The episode mystery was solved, but the bigger backyard mystery had just grown.
Daniel tried to sound calm. βMia, can we look at that drawing again tomorrow?β
βSure,β she said. βAfter I fly it once more.β
Benny gave a tiny bow. βFair deal.β
As Mia ran across the grass with the repaired blue tail fluttering behind her, Daniel touched the whistle in his pocket and looked back toward the bench.
The backyard still had more to say.
