The Wooden Whistle
The tiny whistle from behind the shed sits in Danielβs explorer box all morning. By afternoon, nobody can stand it anymore. They have to find out what it does.
The Clue in the Box
Daniel set the explorer box on the picnic table.
Inside were their backyard clues: the silver bottle cap shield, the toy knight, the X-marked pebble, the faded drawing, and now the tiny wooden whistle on its old string.
Benny leaned in. βIt looks important.β
βMaybe,β Luna said. βThat does not mean we should blow it right away.β
Daniel picked it up carefully. One end was carved into narrow little lines.
βMaybe itβs not even a whistle,β he said.
βThen what is it?β Benny asked. βA mouse flute?β
Grandpa Ray was watering tomato plants nearby. βIf youβre testing an old object,β he called, βbest rule is gentle first.β
βGentle first,β Luna repeated. βI like that.β
So the Backyard Explorer Kids made a plan. They would inspect. They would compare. They would test. And nobody would blast the thing like a fire truck horn.
Wrong Guesses Everywhere
First they checked the whistle against the drawing from the time capsule. No whistle there.
Then Benny held it beside the toy knight. βMaybe itβs a trumpet for parades.β
βFor ants?β Daniel asked.
βTiny royal ants,β Benny said.
Luna studied the faded string. βWhat if it used to hang somewhere?β
They searched the shed wall, the old bench, and the brick edge around the flower patch for hooks, loops, or a place where the whistle might fit. Nothing matched.
βIt came from behind the loose board, but that does not mean it belongs to the shed,β Daniel said.
They looked around the ground near the shed. Daniel found a dry curled leaf. Benny found a striped feather. Luna noticed bits of vine hanging down from the side fence.
βThe vines,β she said. βThey climb all the way to the corner post.β
Daniel looked up. Thick green vines ran along the back fence and around one side of the yard. They made a twisty wall of leaves that the kids had walked past a hundred times.
βYou think the whistle has something to do with that?β he asked.
Luna lifted one shoulder. βNot yet. But I think we should notice it.β
The Backyard Gets Quiet
They moved to the shade and listened to the yard.
A bee droned near the flowers. Leaves rubbed together above the fence. Somewhere far off, a dog barked two times and then stopped.
Then came a quick, bright bird call from the vines.
Bennyβs head popped up. βDid you hear that?β
βYep,β Daniel said.
Another chirp answered from the other side of the yard.
Luna held out her hand for the whistle. She did not put it to her mouth. She only compared its carved end to the sharp little shape of the bird calls they were hearing in the air.
βI think this clue wants sound,β she said quietly.
Daniel looked uncertain. βWhat if we scare something?β
βThen one very soft try,β Luna said. βOut in the open. Not near the vines.β
Grandpa Ray came over. βSoft try is fine,β he said. βStop right away if any bird seems upset.β
Daniel lifted the whistle.
βMouse flute moment,β Benny whispered.
Daniel blew the gentlest puff he could.
The whistle answered with one light peep.
From the vines came the same note back.
Daniel lowered the whistle. βOkay,β he whispered. βThat is definitely something.β
Following the Call Carefully
They waited. A bird zipped from the fence to the lilac bush, carrying a skinny piece of grass in its beak.
βThere!β Luna said, but softly.
The small brown bird vanished into the vines.
Benny hopped once, then remembered to be careful and planted both feet. βNest,β he whispered.
Daniel did not blow again right away. He watched. A second bird fluttered in from the clothesline side and slipped into the same leafy spot.
βThe whistle sounds like their call,β Luna said. βMaybe whoever hid it knew that.β
βOr used it to find the nest without climbing around and poking at the vines,β Daniel said.
Grandpa Ray nodded. βThat would be a kind way to observe birds.β
Now the episode mystery was clear, but the kids still had to solve it the right way. They needed to make sure the bird family was safe.
They stepped back and studied the area. A loose jump rope brushed the vine leaves in the breeze, and a shiny metal bucket sat below.
βThat could bother them,β Luna said.
With Grandpa Ray helping, they moved the bucket to the shed wall. Benny coiled the jump rope and placed it in the porch basket.
The little brown bird returned, slipped into the vines, and stayed there. A tiny rustle came from deep inside the leaves.
Bennyβs voice went soft. βBaby birds?β
Grandpa Ray tipped his head. βCould be.β
Daniel held the whistle in his palm. βOne clue solved,β he said. βIt is a bird-call whistle.β
βAnd the vines are not just vines,β Luna added. βThey are somebodyβs home.β
Benny pointed toward the clothesline. A short bit of blue string was caught near the nest, tucked among the twigs like part of the building.
βUh-oh,β he said. βThat looks familiar.β
Daniel followed his finger. βBlue string,β he said. βJust like from the clothesline bag.β
Luna looked from the nest to the line. βThat sounds like our next clue.β
Daniel placed the whistle back in the explorer box beside the older discoveries. βBackyard Explorer Kids,β he said, βnext mission: find out where that blue string trail begins.β
