The Backward Name Signal
A whistle in the cloud workshop has played Danielβs name backward. Now the Moon Machine is calling Daniel and Luna to a strange mirror moon, where the clues only make sense if they slow down and look twice.
The Sound That Came Backward
Early the next morning, Daniel hurried into the garage workshop with half a piece of toast in his hand.
βLuna, listen,β he said.
The Moon Machine hummed softly. Then a tiny sound floated from one of its silver pipes.
βLeinadβ¦ Leinadβ¦β
Daniel set his toast on the workbench. βThatβs my name backward again.β
Luna opened the silver notebook. A new picture had appeared all by itself. It showed a round moon with a bright line down the middle. Under it were three little drawings: an ear, a pair of feet, and a rabbit.
βListen, walk, rabbit,β Daniel said.
βAnd probably do not rush,β Luna said.
The moon rock in Danielβs pocket gave a warm little buzz, like it agreed.
On the bench sat the star-shaped gear from Robot City and the moon-dust tuning tray from the cloud workshop. The silver dust on the tray slid into a neat line and pointed straight at the Moon Machine door.
Daniel looked at Luna. βThat seems very clear.β
βBossy,β Luna said.
Together, they stepped into the glowing doorway.
A Moon That Did Things the Opposite Way
When the light faded, Daniel stared.
They stood on a silver hill. The ground reflected their shoes. A stream ran uphill. A little silver bird landed on a branch, then hopped backward before it sat still.
Daniel took one quick step and slid sideways.
βWhoa!β
Luna caught his sleeve. βThis place works differently.β
A bell-like chime rang in the distance. They followed it into a valley of mirror bushes. Every leaf showed a tiny reflection. Daniel could see his own face in at least ten leaves at once.
βThat one makes me look like I know what Iβm doing,β he said.
βKeep walking,β Luna said, but she was trying not to laugh.
Then they heard a soft thump.
Behind a curved mirror stone stood a fluffy moon rabbit. It was pale and round, with ears that bent at the tips. It hopped left, stopped, turned, and hopped right back to the very same spot.
βOh,β Daniel said. βItβs lost.β
The rabbit tapped one paw on the ground. A glowing arrow appeared in the silver dirt.
It pointed one way.
The rabbit looked the other way.
Daniel blinked. βThat is not helpful.β
βIt might be,β Luna said. βJust not in the usual way.β
Far up on a silver ridge stood a small arch shaped like two moon ears touching at the top. A pale blue light glowed under it. The rabbit looked toward the arch, then tucked its face under one ear.
βThat must be home,β Daniel said.
The Fast Way Failed
Daniel tried to help right away. He stepped in front of the rabbit and pointed to the arch. The rabbit turned away. He moved left. The rabbit went right. He waved both arms. The rabbit spun in a neat circle and ended up exactly where it had started.
Daniel let out a groan. βI am being bad at this.β
βA little,β Luna said. βBut mostly you are being fast.β
Daniel looked around. The uphill stream. The backward bird. The signal that had played his name backward.
He took a long breath. βOkay. No rushing.β
They watched the rabbit tap the ground again. The glowing arrow came back. This time Daniel noticed tiny silver dots moving from the tail of the arrow to the point.
βWait,β he said. βWhat if the arrow is showing where the rabbit came from, not where it should go?β
Lunaβs face lit up. βA backward path marker.β
Daniel looked at the ridge. βThen to get home, we should move the opposite way from the arrow.β
The rabbit lifted both ears.
βSlowly,β Luna said.
The Listening Path
Daniel took one careful step opposite the arrow.
The rabbit watched him.
He took another slow step. The blue light under the arch gave a tiny flash.
βIt worked,β Daniel whispered.
They kept going, one measured step at a time. When Daniel hurried, the shiny ground made him slip a little. When he stopped and listened for the soft bell sound, the path seemed to settle under his feet again.
βSo the notebook meant listen and walk,β Daniel said.
βAnd help the rabbit by thinking carefully,β Luna said.
Halfway up the ridge, they came to a row of tall mirror stones. Each stone showed a different reflection. One showed the candy planet and its chocolate river. One showed Robot City. Another showed the cloud workshop.
Daniel stopped at the last stone.
It showed their garage at home.
The Moon Machine sat in the middle of the workshop, humming softly.
Then something dark moved inside its shiny side panel.
Daniel grabbed Lunaβs hand. βDid you see that?β
βYes,β she said quietly.
It was only a shadow, gliding across the machine. Then it was gone.
At the edge of the mirror stone sat a tiny silver plate and a little silver feather, both marked with the same three-star symbol.
Daniel swallowed. βThe shadow inside the Moon Machine.β
βAnd someone wanted us to notice,β Luna said.
The moon rabbit bumped Danielβs knee with its nose.
Daniel nodded. βRight. Rabbit first. Big mystery second.β
Home Under the Arch
They moved up the ridge again, calm and steady. The blue light grew brighter. The rabbit stayed close this time, as if it finally trusted the path.
At the top, the round doorway under the moon-ear arch glowed with soft silver rings.
Daniel smiled. βI think we got it now.β
The rabbit hopped through the doorway.
At once, the arch chimed with a happy, tinkly song. Tiny lights floated around the doorway like silver bubbles.
The rabbit popped back out for one second, dropped the silver feather at Danielβs feet, and twitched both ears as if it were saying thank you.
Then it disappeared inside again.
Daniel picked up the feather carefully. βThis goes with the plate and the symbol.β
When he tilted it, a line of light ran along the feather stem and pointed for one quick second back toward home.
βBack to the machine,β Luna said.
Daniel tucked the feather into the silver notebook. βThen thatβs our next clue.β
The Bigger Question
Back in the garage workshop, everything looked normal.
Maybe too normal.
Daniel and Luna walked around the Moon Machine twice. Daniel pressed his face near the shiny side panel. βHello?β he said.
Nothing answered.
Luna set the notebook on the bench. The silver feather slipped out beside the star gear and the moon-dust tray. All three objects glimmered together. Then the notebook page turned by itself.
A new picture appeared.
It showed the Moon Machine from the outside.
And curled in the middle of it was a dark shape, quiet as a secret.
Daniel stared at the page. He did not feel scared. The workshop still felt warm and safe. But now the mystery felt much bigger.
βIf Professor Nova built the Moon Machine,β he said, βwho is inside it?β
Luna touched the picture of the shadow. βAnd how long has it been there?β
The Moon Machine answered with one soft hum and a single blink of blue light.
Daniel looked at the notebook, the feather, and the silver panel.
βNext time,β he said, βwe are checking the inside.β
