The Last Day Locker Mystery

Daniel slumped in his chair and stared at the classroom clock.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

It was the final day of school before summer vacation, and the minutes felt slower than ever.

Outside the window, the playground sparkled in the sunshine. Birds chirped loudly in the trees, and somewhere far away, an ice cream truck played a happy tune.

Emily leaned over from the next desk.

“I think the clock is broken,” she whispered.

Daniel nodded seriously. “It’s been 2:15 for at least an hour.”

Mrs. Carter laughed from the front of the room. “Nice try, detectives. We still have one last classroom activity.”

The class groaned dramatically.

Mrs. Carter handed out empty paper bags. “Clean out your desks and lockers. Anything left behind goes into the lost-and-found box.”

Emily opened her desk and began pulling out crayons, folded worksheets, and tiny pencil stubs.

Then her fingers bumped something strange.

A folded yellow paper.

“That wasn’t there before,” she whispered.

Daniel scooted closer.

Emily carefully unfolded the note.

It said:

LOOK UNDER THE BIG SLIDE BEFORE THE BELL RINGS.

“That’s weird,” Daniel said.

“Really weird,” Emily agreed.

At the bottom of the note was a tiny drawing of a star.

The same little star was scratched onto Emily’s desk.

Daniel’s eyes widened. “Okay… now this is officially a mystery.”

Emily grinned. “We have to solve it.”

The bell for recess rang moments later, and the class rushed outside.

Emily and Daniel sprinted across the playground toward the giant blue slide.

Kids raced past them playing tag while teachers chatted nearby.

Daniel crouched underneath the slide.

“There’s nothing here except dirt and—wait.”

He reached behind one of the support poles and pulled out a small red box.

Emily gasped.

Inside the box was another clue.

THE SWINGS KNOW THE SECRET.

“Who’s doing this?” Daniel asked excitedly.

Emily pointed at the tiny star drawn at the bottom again.

“It’s the same symbol.”

The two hurried toward the swings.

The playground creaked and squeaked around them as kids flew through the air.

Emily searched under the swing seats while Daniel checked the poles.

“I found something!”

Taped underneath one swing was a blue ribbon with another note attached.

YOU ARE GETTING CLOSER.
CHECK THE OLD OAK TREE.

“This is awesome,” Daniel said.

“It feels like we’re in a real treasure hunt,” Emily whispered.

They ran toward the giant oak tree at the edge of the playground.

Its branches stretched wide like giant arms.

Emily noticed something shiny near the roots.

A silver key.

Beside it sat another note.

ONE FINAL PLACE.
WHERE STORIES BEGIN.

Daniel froze.

“The library!”

The two raced back inside the school just as the warning bell rang.

The hallways buzzed with students carrying backpacks and waving goodbye to friends.

Inside the quiet library, sunlight spilled across the bookshelves.

Mrs. Green, the librarian, smiled as they entered.

“Well, well,” she said. “You made it.”

Emily blinked. “You know about the clues?”

Mrs. Green laughed softly and pointed toward a small wooden chest sitting beside the reading rug.

The silver key fit perfectly.

CLICK.

Inside the chest were:

two brand-new notebooks,
packs of colorful gel pens,
bookmarks shaped like stars,
and one final letter.

Emily read it aloud.

“To the best mystery solvers at Maple Grove School:

Summer is full of adventures if you know where to look.
Write your own stories.
Create your own mysteries.
And never stop being curious.

Happy Summer!

—The Secret Story Club”

Daniel’s jaw dropped. “There’s a secret club?”

Mrs. Green winked. “Every great school has a few mysteries.”

Emily smiled so wide her cheeks hurt.

“This is the best last day ever.”

Mrs. Carter suddenly appeared at the library door.

“There you two are,” she said with a grin. “I was wondering how long it would take.”

“You helped?” Daniel asked.

Mrs. Carter nodded proudly. “Only the students who notice small details could solve it.”

Emily looked down at the star bookmark in her hand.

“So… does this mean we’re members now?”

Mrs. Green smiled mysteriously.

“That,” she said, “is for summer to decide.”

As the final school bell rang through the building, Emily and Daniel walked outside carrying their mystery box treasures.

Summer vacation had officially begun.

And somehow…

it already felt like the start of a brand-new adventure.

The End
