The Brass Button Mystery

A shiny brass button leads Emily back to school, where costume pieces for the class play keep disappearing. The clues point everywhere at first, but the real answer is hiding in the busiest room of all.

The Button in Emily’s Pocket

Emily carried the brass button in her hoodie pocket as she walked to school with Jack and Nora.

Jack peeked over. β€œStill checking?”

Emily held it up. The back still showed the tiny notebook symbol. β€œButtons come from somewhere.”

β€œA coat,” Jack said. β€œA bag. A pirate shirt.”

Emily stopped walking. β€œA costume.”

Nora looked up at the school. β€œThe play club is setting up today.”

Emily opened her notebook. Brass button. Check costume room.

A New School Mystery

By recess, Emily had her answer.

Ms. Lopez stood in the assembly room doorway, looking worried. β€œThree hats, one crown, and the moon cape are missing,” she said. β€œDress rehearsal is tomorrow.”

Emily showed her the button. β€œCould this be from one of the costumes?”

Ms. Lopez turned it over. β€œMaybe. Some of these are very old.”

Nora lifted her sketchbook. β€œMay we look?”

β€œPlease,” said Ms. Lopez.

Emily wrote: Missing hats. Missing crown. Missing moon cape. Button may belong here.

Too Many Clues

The assembly room looked as if a rainbow had sneezed.

Silver stars covered one table. Cardboard trees leaned against a wall. A strip of shiny blue cloth trailed across the floor.

β€œThis room is trying to confuse us,” Jack said.

Emily started with the little things. A shoe scrape near the stage. Gold thread caught on a splinter in a low crate. Blue chalk dust by the back door.

Nora sketched where each clue sat in the room. β€œIf we map them, maybe they stop looking random,” she said.

Jack checked behind painted clouds and held up a feathered hat. β€œFound one.”

β€œOne missing hat,” Emily said.

Ms. Lopez let out a breath. β€œAt least we know the room didn’t swallow everything.”

Jack looked pleased with himself. β€œI would like that written down somewhere.”

Emily looked from the cloud stack to the back door and then to the crate. β€œThese clues don’t feel sneaky,” she said. β€œThey feel rushed.”

The Wrong Guess

At lunch, Emily spread the clues across a napkin in her mind. β€œBlue chalk by the back door. Maybe the art club took the costumes by mistake.”

Nora showed her sketch of the room. β€œThen why was one hat on the far side behind the clouds?”

Jack added, β€œAnd why leave the silver gloves? That is lazy stealing.”

Emily almost argued, then stopped. Nora’s sketch made the room look different. The clues were not leading out of the room. They were circling the stage area.

She stared at the brass button. β€œWhat if this button came from the place the costumes were moved to?”

Nora tapped the drawing of the boxes near the stage.

Emily sat up straight. β€œNot stolen. Packed.”

The Costume Box

After lunch, they went back to the assembly room.

At the side of the stage, three tall cardboard boxes stood near a rolling cart. Each one had fresh tape across the top.

Nora touched a flap. β€œThese were closed recently.”

Emily opened the first box. Inside lay two hats.

β€œHat mountain,” Jack said.

Emily opened the next box. Under folded cloth sat the silver paper crown and the moon cape.

Ms. Lopez clapped a hand over her mouth. β€œThere they are!”

Emily nodded. β€œNobody was stealing them. Someone packed the play things early by mistake.”

Ms. Lopez looked at the cart. β€œThe older kids helped clean up yesterday. They must have mixed the costume pieces into storage.”

Nora pointed into the box. β€œThere’s more.”

In the corner was a square scrap of paper. Emily unfolded it carefully.

There were no words, only a bell shape and a clock hand pointing straight up.

β€œNoon,” Jack said.

Emily turned it over. The tiny notebook symbol was on the back.

β€œListen at noon,” she said softly.

She tucked the note beside the brass button in her notebook. The costume mystery was solved, but the bigger mystery had just grown again.
