The Blue Paw Prints
When glowing blue paw prints appear in the garden, Coco follows them into a quiet mystery. Somewhere nearby, a shy kitten needs helpβbut first Coco must figure out why she is hiding.
A Strange Trail in the Garden
Coco woke from his nap because his blue collar felt warm.
βThat means something,β he said, hopping down from Danielβs porch cushion.
He trotted into the garden and stopped at once.
Tiny blue paw prints glowed across the stepping stones. They shimmered softly in the sunshine, as if someone had walked through a puddle of sky.
βMilo!β Coco called.
A gray squirrel zipped down the fence post. βI am here,β Milo announced. βReady for mystery. Also ready for snack, if that comes first.β
Coco pointed with his nose. βLook.β
Milo bent low. βNot my paws. Mine would be much more stylish.β
βPaw prints are not stylish,β Coco said.
βThese are,β said Milo.
The trail led past the mint patch, around the birdbath, and under the tomato vines.
βMaybe this is another clue from the magic collar,β Coco said.
βThen we follow it,β Milo replied. βThat is how clues work.β
So they did.
The Kitten Behind the Pots
The blue prints stopped near the shed behind a stack of flowerpots.
Coco sniffed. Something small was hiding there. Not dangerous. Just scared.
βHello?β he said gently. βWe wonβt hurt you.β
No answer.
Then one pot gave a tiny rustle.
Coco peeked between two pots and saw a kitten tucked into the shadows. She had pale orange fur, white paws, and round green eyes. A soft blue glow dusted her feet.
βHi,β said Coco. βIβm Coco. This is Milo.β
Milo gave a careful little wave. βI can be quiet when needed.β
βFor one whole minute,β Coco said.
The kitten almost smiled, but not quite.
βWhatβs your name?β Coco asked.
βPip,β she whispered.
βThose glowing paw prints are yours?β
Pip looked down. βI think so.β
βTheyβre very pretty,β Coco said.
βTheyβre very easy to follow,β Pip answered.
Milo nodded. βThat is also true.β
Coco sat down so he would not seem too big. βWhy are you hiding?β
Pip curled her tail around herself. βI came through a shining place in the hedge. Then everything felt big. The birds were loud. The bees were buzzy. Even the watering can sounded enormous. So I hid.β
Coco understood. The world felt big to him sometimes too.
βDo you know where home is?β he asked.
Pip nodded. βNear a round pond that shines at night. But I donβt know how to get back.β
Cocoβs collar gave a soft little spark.
βThen thatβs our mystery,β he said.
Too Much, Too Fast
Milo sprang onto an upside-down pot. βEasy! We go to the hedge, find the shining place, zip through, and done.β
Pip pressed herself farther back into the corner.
βNot like that,β Coco said quickly.
He turned to Pip. βWe can go slowly. Very slowly. You only have to take one step at a time.β
Pip looked at the bright garden path outside her hiding place. βWhat if it still feels too big?β
βThen we make it feel smaller,β Coco said.
Just then Ruby the robin fluttered down beside the birdbath. βDid someone say smaller?β
Coco explained in a low voice. Ruby listened, then bobbed her head.
βI can help,β she said.
Soon the animals worked together. Ruby asked the finches to play in the apple tree instead of near the shed. Milo gathered broad leaves and laid them in a soft path from the flowerpots toward the hedge.
He stood back proudly. βLuxury leaf carpet.β
βItβs very nice,β Coco said.
Then he looked at Pip. βWould you like to try one step?β
Pip stretched out one glowing paw.
Step.
Nothing bad happened.
She took another step. Then one more.
By the time she reached Cocoβs side, her tail was not tucked so tightly anymore.
βYouβre doing it,β Coco told her.
βMy paws are still glowing,β Pip whispered.
βMaybe they glow when youβre being brave,β Coco said.
Pip thought about that and gave a tiny nod.
The Shimmering Hedge Door
They made their way across the garden. Coco did not rush. When Pip stopped, everyone stopped.
At the far end of the yard, near Miloβs shortcut, the ivy leaves trembled. Behind them shimmered a thin glowing arch of blue and silver light.
βThatβs it,β Pip said. βThatβs where I came through.β
The arch looked like a tiny secret doorway made of moonlight.
Coco stepped close, but it only rippled once and went still.
βWhy isnβt it opening?β Milo asked.
Ruby landed on the fence. βMaybe it opens only when someone is ready.β
Pip stared at the glowing doorway without moving.
βWhatβs wrong?β Coco asked.
βWhat if home feels big too?β Pip said softly.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Coco said, βMaybe brave doesnβt mean you stop feeling nervous. Maybe it means you take the next small step anyway.β
Pip looked up at him. βEven if my whiskers are wiggling?β
βEspecially then.β
Milo puffed out his chest. βI also take brave steps.β
Ruby tilted her head. βYou jumped because you thought a cucumber was staring at you.β
βIt looked suspicious,β Milo muttered.
Pip let out a tiny giggle.
The glowing arch brightened at once.
The Silver Pond
Beyond the hedge, Coco could suddenly see a hidden garden he had never noticed before. Silver moss covered the ground. Pale flowers swayed in the breeze. At the center lay a round pond that shone like a coin under moonlight, even though the sun was still up.
On the far side stood a gray cat with bright green eyes. She paced along the pondβs edge, looking worried.
βPip?β she called.
Pipβs ears popped up. βMama!β
She ran through the glowing arch. Her blue paw prints flashed behind her like little stars.
The gray cat hurried forward and wrapped herself around Pip in one soft, warm hug.
βI was so worried,β she said.
βI got scared in the big garden,β Pip admitted.
Her mother touched noses with her. βYou found your way back. That was brave.β
Coco, Milo, and Ruby stayed near the hedge and watched quietly.
Then Pip turned around and waved one white paw.
βThank you, Coco!β she called. βAnd thank you, Milo! And thank you, Ruby!β
Ruby puffed happily. βThatβs better.β
Pipβs mother bowed her head. βYou helped my little one when she needed kindness most.β
Cocoβs collar shimmered brightly.
Blue light danced across the silver pond.
For one quick moment, the water changed into a picture inside the pictureβa different pond under a darker sky, bright with moonlight.
Coco stared.
So did Milo.
βDid you see that?β Milo squeaked.
Ruby fluffed her feathers. βYes. I also have several questions.β
The glowing image faded. The pond was only a pond again.
Coco looked through the hedge one last time. Pip was safe. Her mother was washing the top of her head. The silver flowers nodded in the breeze.
One mystery was solved.
But now Coco had a brand-new clue.
Milo twitched his tail. βMoonlit pond next?β
Coco looked up as the first evening star blinked above the garden.
βMoonlit pond next,β he said.
