Sam wanted more than anything to become a pirate like his family. There was only one problem—he was afraid of the ocean. Every wave made his heart race, and every splash made him want to run back to shore.
A Pirate Family
Everyone in Sam’s family loved the sea.
His mother was Captain Rose, the bravest pirate on the coast.
His grandfather had sailed around the world.
His older sister could climb the tallest mast without looking down.
But Sam…
Sam liked to keep both feet on dry land.
He loved drawing pirate ships.
He loved reading pirate stories.
He even wore a pirate hat almost every day.
But whenever he stood near the water, his stomach felt funny.
The waves seemed too big.
The boats rocked too much.
“What if I fall in?” he whispered.
The Invitation
One bright morning, Captain Rose smiled.
“Today is the day.”
Sam looked up.
“The day for what?”
“Your first sailing trip.”
Sam’s smile disappeared.
“I…I don’t think I’m ready.”
Captain Rose sat beside him.
“That’s all right.”
“You don’t have to sail across the whole sea today.”
“I don’t?”
She shook her head.
“We’ll take one small step.”
One Small Step
They walked to the dock.
Sam stopped far away from the edge.
Captain Rose didn’t rush him.
She simply smiled.
“Today, your job is easy.”
“What is it?”
“Touch the boat.”
“That’s all?”
“That’s all.”
Sam slowly walked forward.
His hands shook a little.
He reached out.
Tap.
He touched the side of the little pirate boat.
Then he smiled.
“I did it!”
Captain Rose clapped.
“See you tomorrow.”
Sam blinked.
“That’s it?”
“That’s enough for today.”
Another Little Step
The next day, Sam climbed into the boat.
It stayed tied safely to the dock.
The boat rocked a tiny bit.
Sam grabbed the side.
“I don’t like this.”
“You don’t have to like it,” Captain Rose said gently.
“You only have to stay for one minute.”
One minute became two.
Then three.
Soon Sam noticed something.
The rocking wasn’t so scary anymore.
Out on the Water
A few days later, Captain Rose untied the rope.
The little boat drifted only a few feet from the dock.
Sam’s hands squeezed the seat.
His heart thumped.
The water splashed softly against the boat.
“We’re moving,” he whispered.
“Yes,” said Captain Rose.
“And you’re doing wonderfully.”
After just a few minutes, they returned.
Sam let out a long breath.
“I thought I couldn’t do it.”
“But you did.”
The Big Wave
The next week, Sam felt much braver.
Then, without warning…
Splash!
A bigger wave bumped the boat.
Sam jumped.
His heart started racing again.
“I want to go back!”
Captain Rose nodded.
“We can.”
She gently turned the boat toward shore.
Sam looked surprised.
“We’re not going to keep going?”
Captain Rose smiled.
“Being brave doesn’t mean forcing yourself.”
“It means trying again another day.”
Trying Again
The next morning, Sam returned.
Then the next day.
And the day after that.
Each trip was a little longer.
Each wave felt a little smaller.
One afternoon, Sam looked around.
The shore wasn’t very close anymore.
Birds flew overhead.
Fish jumped from the water.
The breeze felt cool on his face.
He smiled.
“I almost forgot to be scared.”
Captain Rose laughed.
“Sometimes that happens.”
A Real Pirate
As the sun began to set, Captain Rose handed Sam the ship’s little spyglass.
“I think you’re ready.”
“For what?”
“To help me find our way home.”
Sam looked across the sparkling sea.
He spotted the lighthouse.
He found the safe path between the rocks.
He pointed toward the harbor.
“This way!”
Captain Rose smiled proudly.
When they reached the dock, Sam jumped onto the pier.
He looked back at the water.
It was still big.
It was still deep.
Sometimes it was still a little scary.
But now he knew something important.
Courage wasn’t about never being afraid.
Courage was taking one small step.
Then another.
And another.
Until one day, you looked back and realized just how far you had come.
Captain Rose put an arm around his shoulder.
“So…”
Sam grinned.
“When are we sailing again?”
