The Noon Bell Note

At lunch, Emily heard something odd. The school bell gave one extra tiny chime, and her mystery note had warned her to listen at noon.

The Tiny Sound

Emily was opening her lunch when the school bell rang.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

Then came one more sound.

Ting.

Emily froze. Jack nearly dropped his sandwich.

β€œWhat happened?” he asked.

Emily pulled the note from her notebook pocket. It was the one she had found in the costume box.

Listen at noon.

β€œThat extra sound,” she said. β€œThat’s the clue.”

Jack tilted his head. β€œI heard the bell.”

β€œYou heard the big sound. I heard the little one too.”

Nora joined them by the fence, holding her sketchbook. Emily asked, β€œDid you hear a tiny chime after the bell?”

Nora thought for a second. β€œYes. Like a spoon tapping a cup.”

Emily wrote in her notebook.

Clue 1: Noon bell has one extra tiny chime.

Wrong Clues First

The three friends walked to the side of the school where the bell rope hung near the office walkway.

Everything looked normal.

Jack found a green twist tie near the flower bed.

β€œMystery string,” he announced.

Nora shook her head. β€œGarden club.”

Emily agreed and left it there.

A little later, Nora spotted a shiny bit of silver under a bench. Emily hurried over, but it was only a granola bar wrapper.

Jack sighed. β€œWe are very good at finding boring things.”

β€œBoring things help rule out wrong ideas,” Emily said.

She looked up at the bell again. The rope hung still beside the brick wall. Nothing seemed unusual.

After school, Emily asked Ms. Chen if they could stand by the walkway when the last bell rang.

β€œNo climbing and no poking anything,” Ms. Chen said.

β€œOnly observing,” Emily promised.

The end-of-day bell rang.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

No extra chime.

Emily frowned. β€œIt only happens at noon.”

Jack leaned near the wall and then pulled back. β€œHey.”

A tiny streak of gold paint was on the brick beside the rope.

Nora looked up at the poster board nearby. β€œThat could be from the third-grade art project. They made welcome-song decorations last week.”

Emily wrote again.

Clue 2: Gold paint near the bell rope.

She tucked the notebook away. β€œTomorrow we watch the rope at noon.”

The Right Moment

The next day, Emily was ready before lunch.

β€œDon’t watch the bell,” she whispered to Jack and Nora. β€œWatch the rope.”

At noon, the bell rang again.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

On the last swing, the rope twisted against the wall.

Ting.

Something tiny flashed in the sunlight.

β€œThere!” Emily said.

After lunch, Ms. Chen brought over Mr. Ruiz, the custodian. He gently pulled the rope down so they could see the top loop better.

Tied near it with faded gold thread was a tiny metal charm.

Jack gave a soft whistle. β€œSo that made the sound.”

β€œYes,” Emily said. β€œNot the bell. The charm.”

Mr. Ruiz nodded. β€œThat makes sense. Some kids made little keepsake charms for the welcome-song project. One must have gotten caught up here by mistake.”

Emily held the charm in her palm. It was shaped like a tiny diary with a clasp on the front.

β€œA locked diary,” Nora said.

Emily turned it over.

Her breath caught.

Stamped on the back was the same tiny notebook symbol she had seen before.

Jack leaned closer. β€œThat is not an accident.”

Emily’s fingers curled carefully around the charm. The bell mystery was solved, but the bigger mystery had just grown.

One More Clue

On a playground bench, Emily opened her notebook and wrote:

Case solved: The extra noon chime came from a loose charm tied near the bell rope. It tapped the rope on the last swing.

Then she added:

New clue: The charm is shaped like a locked diary and stamped with the notebook symbol.

Jack looked at the page. β€œYour notebook is collecting clues about another notebook. That feels very notebook-ish.”

Nora tucked her pencil behind her ear. β€œAnd now maybe a diary too.”

Emily slipped the little charm into the notebook pocket and zipped it shut.

β€œGood,” she said. β€œI want to know where it leads.”

The next time the bell rang, it gave only three plain clangs.

But in Emily’s pocket, the tiny diary charm tapped once against her notebook, as if the next case was already waiting.
