Captain Molly and her young pirate crew discover an island that seems to disappear every morning. If they can’t figure out its secret before sunset, they may never find their way home.
A Strange Island
Captain Molly stood at the front of her little pirate ship, The Happy Gull, with her spyglass in hand.
“There it is!” she called.
Ben, Lily, and Tom hurried to the side of the ship.
Ahead of them sat a beautiful little island.
Tall palm trees swayed in the breeze.
Bright flowers covered the sandy hill.
Colorful birds flew through the sky.
“It wasn’t on our map,” Ben said.
“That’s what makes it exciting,” Molly smiled.
The crew dropped their anchor and climbed onto the beach.
They spent the whole afternoon exploring.
They collected shiny seashells.
They found tiny crabs hiding between the rocks.
They ate sweet coconuts that had fallen from the trees.
“This is the best island ever,” Lily said.
As the sun began to set, the crew returned to their ship.
“We’ll come back tomorrow,” Tom said.
Everyone agreed.
Where Did It Go?
The next morning, Captain Molly looked through her spyglass.
Her smile disappeared.
“The island…”
“What about it?” Ben asked.
“It’s gone.”
The crew looked in every direction.
Only blue water stretched across the sea.
“That’s impossible,” Lily whispered.
“We were just there.”
Tom checked the map.
“It should be right here.”
The crew sailed around all morning.
Nothing.
No beach.
No trees.
No island.
Late that afternoon, Ben suddenly pointed across the water.
“There!”
The island had appeared again.
Exactly the same as before.
The crew hurried back.
“This is getting strange,” Molly said.
The Island Moves Again
The next morning…
Gone.
That afternoon…
Back again.
The same thing happened the next day.
And the next.
Tom scratched his head.
“Maybe the island is magic.”
Lily wasn’t so sure.
“Maybe we’re missing something.”
Captain Molly nodded.
“Pirates don’t solve problems by guessing.”
“We watch.”
“We listen.”
“And we think.”
Looking Carefully
The next day, nobody searched for treasure.
Nobody climbed trees.
Nobody chased crabs.
Instead, they watched everything.
Ben watched the waves.
Lily watched the birds.
Tom watched the sky.
Captain Molly watched the shoreline.
Hours passed.
Then Ben noticed something.
“The water is getting lower.”
Lily looked.
“You’re right!”
Large rocks slowly appeared from beneath the water.
More and more rocks rose above the sea.
Tom gasped.
“They weren’t there this morning.”
Captain Molly smiled.
“Keep watching.”
Soon, a long rocky path stretched across the water.
The path reached all the way to the island.
“The island didn’t move,” Lily said.
“We just couldn’t reach it!”
Captain Molly nodded.
“But why?”
The Old Lighthouse
The crew followed the rocky path.
On the far side of the island stood an old lighthouse.
An elderly lighthouse keeper waved to them.
“I wondered when someone would notice.”
“You knew?” Ben asked.
The old man laughed kindly.
“This island has fooled sailors for many years.”
“It isn’t moving at all.”
He pointed toward the sea.
“The tide is.”
“When the tide comes in, the water covers the rocky path.”
“The island looks far away.”
“When the tide goes out, the path appears again.”
Tom’s eyes grew wide.
“So the island never moved!”
“No.”
“You simply didn’t notice what the ocean was doing.”
A New Plan
Captain Molly thanked the lighthouse keeper.
Before leaving, he gave them a small notebook.
Inside were drawings of the tides.
“The ocean has its own schedule,” he said.
“If you watch carefully, it will tell you where it is going.”
The crew spent the next two days watching the sea.
Soon they could tell when the tide would rise.
They could tell when it would fall.
Finding the island became easy.
The Best Pirate Skill
As The Happy Gull sailed home, Ben smiled.
“I thought pirates needed fast ships.”
Tom grinned.
“I thought they needed treasure maps.”
Lily laughed.
“I thought they needed brave hearts.”
Captain Molly smiled at all of them.
“Those things help.”
“But the best pirates do something even more important.”
“What?” they asked.
“They pay attention.”
“They notice little things that others miss.”
“The ocean is always giving us clues.”
“We just have to look.”
The crew watched the waves sparkle in the afternoon sun.
Now they noticed things they had never seen before.
Tiny ripples.
Changing clouds.
Flying birds.
The rising tide.
The falling tide.
The island had never been moving at all.
Only the way they looked at it had changed.
And that was the greatest discovery of all.
