The Missing Star Badge
A quick flash of sunlight in the treehouse sends Emily and Jack chasing the missing star badge at last. But the badge is not waiting in the storage nook. It is high above them, hiding in plain sight.
The Flash in the Window
Emily was lining up the old acorn badges on the treehouse shelf when a bright dot bounced across the wall.
She froze. âDid you see that?â
Jack looked up from the floor. âIf you mean my amazing acorn tower, yes.â
âNot that.â Emily pointed. âThe light.â
A tiny gleam skipped over the table, touched the silver bell, and vanished.
Jack stood up fast. âOkay. That was real.â
Emily hurried to the hidden nook behind the little treehouse door. Every old badge was there except the missing one. The empty space was shaped like a star.
Jack leaned beside her. âMaybe the light has something to do with the missing badge.â
Emily nodded. âIf the original club left clues, they might have used sunlight too.â
Just then the bright dot flashed again. This time it landed near the window.
Emily grabbed her notebook. âOutside. Now.â
Following the Shine
They climbed down and moved around the treehouse, stopping every few steps to look back at the window.
âTilt your head,â Jack said. âNo, the other way. Now you look like a puzzled duck.â
Emily kept staring through the branches. âWait.â
A small flash winked from high in the old oak near the treehouse.
Jack pointed. âThat tree.â
Under the oak, the grass was full of twigs and moss. Emily looked up again. At first, all she saw were leaves. Then a robin zipped out from the branches, and something inside the nest flashed once more.
Jack let out a low whistle. âA nest.â
Emily stared. âA bird must have carried the badge there.â
âBecause birds love shiny things,â Jack said. âAnd because the old club probably did not plan for robins.â
Emily gave him a quick look. âThat is a very fair detective note.â
Too High to Reach
The nest sat on a branch much too high for either of them.
Emily fetched the old step stool they had found by the creek. She climbed up and stretched as far as she could.
Her fingers waved in empty air.
âNot even close,â Jack said.
They searched around the tree and found an old rake near the ferns. Jack held it up hopefully.
Emily shook her head. âToo poky. We cannot scare the bird or ruin the nest.â
They both looked up again.
Then Jack glanced back at the treehouse window. âWhat if we are solving the wrong part first?â
Emily frowned. âWhat do you mean?â
âThe badge has already been sending the light into the treehouse. Maybe the light is the clue. Maybe we need to see where it lands.â
Emily broke into a smile. âJack, that is brilliant.â
He put a hand on his chest. âPlease write that down forever.â
The Light Path
They hurried back into the treehouse and waited for the next flash. It came a minute later, right across the hidden nook.
Emily crouched low. âIt is landing under the badge shelf.â
Jack dropped beside her. âThat board looks different.â
He was right. One narrow strip of wood under the shelf had a tiny groove.
Emily pressed it. Nothing happened.
Then the flash returned and landed right on the groove.
Emily slipped her fingernail into it and tugged.
A skinny wooden drawer slid out with a soft scrape.
Inside was a round metal mirror no bigger than a cookie.
Jack picked it up carefully. âA mirror?â
Emily turned it over. On the back was the acorn symbol and a little star-shaped dent.
She looked from the dent to the empty star space in the nook. âThe missing badge still matters. This mirror needs it.â
Now the mystery felt bigger than ever.
But first, they still had to get the badge down.
A Safe Plan
Emily thought for a moment. âWe need someone taller with the right tool.â
Jack grinned. âFinally. A plan that does not involve me becoming a squirrel.â
They ran to the park path and found Mr. Lopez, the groundskeeper, trimming low branches near the picnic tables.
Emily explained the shiny object in the nest. She left out the secret drawer part, of course.
Mr. Lopez followed them to the oak and looked up. âThat does look like a badge.â
He fetched a tall orchard pole with a soft basket on the end from his cart.
âI use this for stuck balls and toy airplanes,â he said. âA badge should be easy.â
The robin had already flown to a nearby branch. Mr. Lopez moved slowly and gently, lifting only the shiny badge from the edge of the nest without disturbing anything else.
It dropped into the basket with a tiny clink.
Jack pumped both fists. âYes!â
Mr. Lopez handed it down. âHere you go, detectives.â
Emily and Jack thanked him about six times.
The Hidden Message
The badge was warm from the sun. It was wooden, shaped like a star, and painted with a faded silver edge.
They hurried back up to the treehouse and slid the star badge into the empty space in the hidden nook.
Click.
Both children jumped.
The round mirror in Emilyâs hand fit perfectly over the badge. She pressed them together.
Click again.
A second panel popped open behind the shelf.
Inside was a rolled piece of thick paper tied with pale blue thread.
Jack whispered, âNo way.â
Emily untied it and unrolled it on the table. There was no big map this time. Just a drawing of a round clock face and one short line from the original club:
Find the clock before moonrise.
If you are reading this, you are closer than we ever were.
Jack read it twice. âA clock? In the woods?â
Emily touched the old paper gently. âMaybe near the treehouse. Maybe by the roots. Maybe somewhere we have walked right past.â
Jack looked at the badge, the mirror, and the note spread across the table. âThe original club really loved making us work for this.â
Emily tucked the note into her notebook. âMaybe they wanted the next club to learn the same thing they did.â
âWhich is?â Jack asked.
Emily looked out at Whisper Woods. âPay attention. Help first. And never ignore a weird flash in the window.â
Jack gave a soft laugh. âThat is a solid rule.â
Emily slid the star badge back into its place, where it finally belonged.
Then she looked toward the woods and said, âTomorrow, we find the clock.â
