When Coco finds a bright blue collar under the porch, the backyard suddenly fills with voices. A worried robin needs help fast, and Cocoβs very first magical day turns into a mystery.
A Very Strange Find
Coco was not supposed to be under the porch.
He knew that because Daniel had already said, βCoco, no digging,β that morning.
But Coco was tiny, curious, and sure that something shiny was hiding in the dust.
He squeezed under the porch anyway.
Near a wooden post, he found a blue collar half-buried in the dirt. It was brighter than the sky, and tiny silver sparkles ran around the edge.
Coco picked it up and wriggled back into the sunshine.
Just then, a gray squirrel rushed along the fence and skidded to a stop.
βYou found it!β the squirrel squeaked.
Coco dropped the collar. βDid you just talk?β
The squirrelβs tail puffed out. βDid you just answer?β
They stared at each other.
Then the squirrel scampered down the fence post. βIβm Milo,β he said. βThis is the most exciting thing that has happened to me all week.β
βIβm Coco,β said Coco. βThis is the most exciting thing that has happened to me ever.β
Milo pointed at the collar. βPut it on.β
βWhy?β
βBecause magic things are never boring.β
βThat is not a careful reason,β Coco said.
βNo,β Milo agreed. βBut it is a strong one.β
The Backyard Starts Talking
Coco nosed the blue collar open. It clicked around his neck.
At once, the whole yard filled with voices.
Coco’s little heart started beating so fast he thought everyone in the yard might hear it.
The bees buzzed about flowers. The ants argued about crumbs. A butterfly drifted by and muttered, βToo breezy, too breezy.β
Coco sat down hard. βOh.β
From the birdbath came a worried flutter.
A robin landed on the rim and looked ready to burst into tears.
βMy ribbon is gone!β she cried. βMy best nest ribbon is gone!β
Coco blinked at her. βYou can understand me too?β
The robin blinked back. βYou can understand me?β
βApparently that is happening a lot today,β said Coco.
βIβm Ruby,β said the robin. βI found a soft red ribbon near the clothesline basket. I was using it in my nest. I left for one minute, and now itβs missing.β
Milo gasped. βA nest emergency.β
Ruby drooped. βTonight might be chilly. My eggs will get cold tonight. I need it back.β
Coco looked up at her nest in the maple tree, then back at her worried face.
His collar gave a tiny warm glow.
βWeβll help,β he said.
Following the Clues
Coco sniffed near the birdbath while Milo searched the fence line and Ruby flew low over the grass.
Near the daisies, Ruby spotted a tiny red thread.
βThatβs part of it!β she cried.
Coco sniffed the thread. βRibbon. And dirt.β
They followed the trail to the vegetable patch, where another red thread clung to a tomato cage.
βSo something dragged it,β said Coco.
Under the garden bench, they found one more red thread and a shiny marble.
Milo tapped the marble. βThat does not belong to a robin.β
βNo,β said Coco, βbut it does belong to somebody who likes collecting things.β
All three of them turned toward the porch steps, where a fat orange cat slept in a warm patch of sun.
Ruby fluffed up. βMr. Pickles!β
Milo whispered, βCats do steal things.β
Coco crept closer and sniffed around the step.
Then he shook his head. βNo ribbon smell. Just cat and sunshine.β
βSo it wasnβt him,β said Ruby.
The mystery was still unsolved.
The Search Gets Hard
They searched the shed, the hose reel, the flowerpots, and the wheelbarrow.
No ribbon.
Rubyβs voice grew small. βMaybe I should just use dry grass.β
βThat does not sound like your favorite plan,β Coco said.
βIt is not.β
Just then, a barn owl glided down from the old oak tree. A tiny moon-shaped charm hung at her neck.
βYou are searching in a hurry,β she said softly.
βHazel!β said Milo. βCoco found the blue collar, and now everything is talking.β
Hazel studied Coco for a moment. βSo the collar has chosen new ears.β
Coco looked up at her. βDo you know what this is?β
βAn old gift,β Hazel said. βIt listens for needs.β
Cocoβs ears perked up. βThen it appeared because Ruby needed help?β
βPerhaps,β Hazel said. βTell me your clues.β
They told her about the threads and the marble.
Hazel was quiet for a moment. Then she asked, βWhat creature in this yard likes soft things, shiny things, and small safe places?β
Miloβs tail twitched. βThe mice.β
Ruby let out a little gasp.
Coco looked toward the porch. βAnd tonight is chilly.β
Hazel gave a calm nod. βMost creatures are not trying to be mean. They are trying to solve their own problem.β
Under the Porch
Now Coco understood.
He hurried back to the porch opening with Milo and Ruby close behind.
βHello?β Coco called. βWeβre here about a ribbon.β
There was a rustle in the shadows.
Then two tiny mice peeked out, followed by three baby mice with wiggly ears. Around their nest was a red ribbon.
βThatβs mine,β Ruby said, but her voice was more sad than angry.
The mama mouse ducked her head. βIβm sorry. The babies were cold. It was so soft. I only meant to borrow it for a little while.β
Coco looked at the baby mice huddled together. Ruby looked too.
βYou should have asked,β Ruby said.
βYouβre right,β said the mama mouse. βI just panicked.β
Coco thought hard. The porch basket near the laundry door flashed into his mind.
βWait,β he said. βDanielβs basket has soft dryer lint. And Milo can find thistle fluff. Ruby has feathers. We can make the mouse nest warm and return the ribbon too.β
Milo bounced. βThat is smart.β
Ruby lifted her wings. βIf the ribbon comes back now, Iβll help gather the rest.β
The mama mouseβs whiskers trembled. βYou would?β
βYes,β said Ruby. βBut next time, ask first.β
βI will,β said the mouse.
So they all got to work.
Coco dragged over dryer lint. Milo brought thistle fluff. Ruby tucked in two feathers. In only a few minutes, the mouse nest looked warm and snug.
The red ribbon was gently unwound and handed back.
Ruby flew it up to her nest and tucked it into place.
βPerfect,β she called down. βThank you, Coco!β
The First Big Clue
Cocoβs blue collar gave another soft sparkle.
Milo scampered onto the fence beside him and lowered his voice. βI once heard that collar belonged to a forest guardian.β
Coco looked up quickly. βA real forest guardian?β
Milo nodded. βThatβs what my uncle said, and he only stretches the truth a little.β
Hazel glided overhead and circled once before landing.
βOld stories often keep one true piece inside them,β she said. βWhat matters now is this: the collar tends to appear when someone is ready to help.β
Coco looked around the yard. The ants had stopped arguing. Ruby was humming in her nest. The baby mice were warm under the porch.
Nothing looked ordinary anymore.
βI think,β Coco said slowly, βtomorrow might be surprising too.β
Miloβs eyes brightened. βGood. I know a shortcut through the hedge.β
Coco tilted his head. βOf course you do.β
