Little Bird Shares
Little Bird lived high at the top of an oak tree with his mom and dad. He slept in a cozy nest that Momma Bird had built just for him. Winter’s icy fingers had covered the forest, leaving icicles hanging like sparkling diamonds.
Below, Franny Fawn and her mom were trying to drink from the frozen pond. They were breaking the ice with their hooves. Nearby, a rabbit family searched the bushes for a few leftover berries.
Little Bird enjoyed watching the human children skating on the frozen pond. Others stood by a bonfire, roasting marshmallows. Oh, what fun, thought Little Bird.
He loved looking at the forest on cold winter nights before falling asleep. He snuggled up in his warm hat, scarf, and mittens that Momma Bird had knitted for him last Christmas.
A Kind Little Bird
Morning came, and after a breakfast of worms, Little Bird spread his wings for his daily flight.
“Watch out for hawks and cats, and don’t go too far,” Momma warned.
“I’ll be careful!” Little Bird chirped.
He was an only child and sometimes felt lonely. He wished for a baby brother, like the one Flossy Bunny had last spring. Momma Bird was too old to have more little birds, but she always said, “You have the biggest heart in the forest, and that’s worth more than anything.”
Little Bird flew in happy circles, feeling warm in his winter clothes. Then he saw a little boy below wearing a torn jacket and no hat.
“Oh dear, he must be cold,” Little Bird said. He swooped low and dropped his hat right onto the boy’s head.
The boy looked up, smiled, and waved. Little Bird chirped proudly and flew on.
Soon, he spotted a baby squirrel rubbing his paws together, shivering in the cold. Little Bird flew low again and dropped his mittens beside the squirrel. The little squirrel squeaked with joy and clapped his paws.
A little farther on, Little Bird passed a possum playing with his children in the snow. They laughed and rolled down the hill, their furry tails brushing the powdery ground. The sight made Little Bird giggle.
Then he saw a baby mouse standing in a cornfield, trying to stay warm. Little Bird landed on a corn stalk and gently placed his scarf on it. The mouse squeaked in surprise, then wrapped it around his shoulders and smiled.
A Warm Heart
By now, Little Bird’s feathers were cold. He turned back toward his tree, shivering in the chilly wind.
When he landed, Momma Bird looked worried. “Little Bird, where are your hat, scarf, and mittens?”
“I saw friends who needed them more than I did,” he said softly.
Momma Bird smiled and patted his head. “You have a warm heart, my little one.” She tucked him under her wings, and soon he was fast asleep.
A Christmas Surprise
Winter grew colder, covering the forest with a thick blanket of snow. Christmas was only two weeks away, and every animal was decorating their home.
Momma and Daddy Bird hung tiny Christmas lights on the branches above their nest. The squirrel family painted pinecones red and green and strung them like garland around their treehouse. The bunny family placed a little tree outside their burrow, sparkling with berries and snowflakes.
By Christmas Eve, the whole forest glowed with color and joy.
That night, as the moon shone high, a soft golden light appeared in the sky. A Christmas angel named Selena floated down, her wings shimmering like stars.
“Come here, little one,” she said kindly.
Little Bird hopped forward, blinking in wonder.
“Because you gave up your warmth to help others, I have a gift for you.” She handed him a shiny, gold-wrapped box. Inside were red-striped mittens, a hat, and a scarf—just his size.
Then Selena turned to Momma Bird. “A baby bird fell from his nest, and his mother never returned. Would you take him in?”
Momma Bird’s eyes filled with tears. “Of course,” she said, gently tucking the tiny baby under her wing.
Little Bird chirped happily, “I have a baby brother!”
The angel smiled. “May your new gifts keep you as warm as your giving heart.”
With that, she waved goodbye and disappeared into the starry sky.
That Christmas morning, the forest glowed brighter than ever—because kindness had made it shine.
The End!
